Guess who’s having one of the best weeks ever? Chandler Kellan Miller…that’s who! Chandler has been a trooper through all of this. He has been through so much. He has been to doctor after doctor, has had test after test and sadly, a lot of needles. As anyone might expect he has had moments where he is tired of “all this” and “just wants to get back to his normal life!” (I know…I know) There are a lot of scary things going on…especially to an eight year old child. For Chandler one of the scariest things has been getting his chemo port or “portal” (as he calls it…lol)

(A chemo port is a thin, soft, plastic tube surgically implanted into a vein in your chest or arm. It allows healthcare professionals to draw blood and deliver chemotherapy drugs directly into a vein without having to insert an IV needle each time. The chemo port produces a small bump under your skin. Chandler’s chemo port is internal which is a new option being offered to protect against infection better. This is safer for Chandler but unlike the external chemo port, does require one stick each time it is accessed.)

accessed. It has unfortunately taken five to six people at a time to hold him down. This has been so hard on everyone…the nurses, doctors, grandmas, Mama…but most of all on little Chandler. This week the doctors ordered Ativan for Chandler, to be given a half of a hour before accessing his “portal”. PROBLEM SOLVED! Now mind you each time they accessed his “portal” Child Life has tried all sorts of things to try and keep his attention from what was going on…including “Daisy” the dummy, toys and books. He was just not having any of it. This time they brought in some cool ooze type toy. It was an acrylic box of colored ooze that, when tipped, the ooze would slide down and…well, it just looked cool. He laid back and looked at the “ooze toy” like Peter Fonda in “Easy Rider”…right. Well, before he even knows it, the deed is done. He was so stoked! Now…being eight, Chandler doesn’t know Ativan from Fintstone vitamins so he attributes his new found bravery to the ooze toy. I’m telling you…he was so funny…and…well let’s keep it real, Chandler was DRUNK! The nurses and doctors all clapped for him as he left the hospital, congratulating him on his courage and he tells them if they just would have brought him that toy sooner “We would not have had to go through all this!” They gave him a thumbs up, the toy a…thumbs up. They gave Niki and I a wink! Before leaving the hospital we decided to check the hospital gift shop to purchase our own “ooze toy” and to go to the hospital pharmacy for some children’s Tylenol. Chandler had a five minute discussion with the pharmacist about the “Buckeyes”, and he just kept striking conversations with random folks. We kept reeling him in by his coat hood! Before we could head home we had to stop at the Cincinnati Eye Institute for his post-op visit. He kept reading the sign and saying…”Cincinnati Eye InstiTOOT ya get it? Eye InstiTOOT”…and each time he would slap his leg and crack up. Niki held his arm as he wobbled around and we laughed and laughed with him! His silliness was contagious and we were all a goofy mess! Isn’t it strange that even in the midst of something so hard…you can have…one of the best days ever?
